Missing Pilot Found Dead in Submerged Aircraft Near Minden Hills

A multi-day search for a missing pilot in the Kawartha Lakes region has ended in tragedy after rescue crews located his small aircraft submerged in a provincial park lake, with the pilot confirmed dead inside.

The pilot, identified only as David, 73, disappeared after taking off from Oshawa Executive Airport at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2026. He had been expected to return by 9:30 a.m. that same morning but never arrived, prompting family members to report him missing.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, search teams made their first breakthrough on Monday when they recovered aircraft debris from Wolfe Lake in Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park, located northwest of Peterborough. The following day, Tuesday, August 19, 2026, crews discovered the home-built plane itself resting beneath the lake's surface.

Searchers confirmed the pilot had not survived the incident. Authorities are now working to develop a recovery plan for the aircraft, which remains underwater.

The experienced aviator was last spotted in the Balsam Lake area near Kirkfield. Durham Regional Police had described him as someone who regularly flew in the region south of the municipality of Kawartha Lakes and north of Lake Scugog.

The search effort brought together resources from multiple organizations, including the Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, which oversees air and marine rescue operations throughout Ontario. The OPP's City of Kawartha Lakes detachment participated alongside other agencies, with Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources providing crucial assistance in locating both the aircraft and the pilot.

"The OPP extends its sincere condolences to the pilot's family and loved ones and thanks members of the public who provided information, support and assistance throughout the search effort," police said in a news release issued Wednesday, August 20, 2026.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, the federal agency responsible for investigating aviation accidents, has deployed investigators to the Minden Hills area. The TSB is examining the circumstances that led to the crash of the privately registered small plane.

Our community's thoughts are with the pilot's family and all those affected by this loss. The collaborative response from rescue teams and the public demonstrates the strength of our regional network when tragedy strikes.
