A large-scale rescue operation is underway in the Kawartha Lakes area as crews work to locate an overdue pilot who vanished during what was supposed to be a routine flight Friday morning.
David Douglas, 73, took off from Oshawa Executive Airport at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, expecting to return within an hour. He never arrived back as planned, prompting Durham Regional Police to issue a public appeal for assistance later that day.
The Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed Sunday on X that search efforts are concentrated near Balsam Lake in southern Ontario's Kawartha Lakes region. Douglas was piloting a light blue and yellow amateur-built aircraft when he disappeared.
Richard Wiltshire, Douglas's cousin, described the missing pilot as an experienced aviator who regularly takes leisure flights. "This trip is, my understanding, this trip is quite normal for him to go on a flight," Wiltshire told Global News. "We want him home, we want him safe with his family again."
Authorities are urging residents in cottage areas throughout the region to review their memories of Friday morning carefully. A news release issued on behalf of Douglas's family specifically asks anyone who may have heard an aircraft flying at an unusually low altitude, or noticed an engine changing pitch or stopping, to contact 911 immediately.
Property owners with security cameras or other recording devices are being asked to preserve any footage captured on Friday and report it to emergency services. Even seemingly insignificant details could prove crucial to locating the missing pilot.
Douglas is described as standing five-foot-seven with a slim build, black and grey hair, and a mustache. The 73-year-old's disappearance has mobilized a coordinated response involving multiple agencies as the search enters its third day.
Anyone with information about Douglas's whereabouts or who may have witnessed anything unusual Friday morning is asked to call 911 immediately.
