Our community has a chance to shape the future of one of downtown's key corridors as the City of Peterborough seeks public input on a major reconstruction effort along Charlotte Street.
City officials are asking residents to complete an online survey about the planned overhaul of Charlotte Street from Park Street North to Water Street. The feedback will guide detailed design work for a project that aims to both modernize underground utilities and reimagine what the street looks like at ground level.
The survey, which takes approximately 10 minutes to finish, remains open until 11:59pm on September 14th. Residents can also pick up paper versions at Service Peterborough inside City Hall at 500 George St. N.
Officials are particularly interested in learning how people currently use Charlotte Street East and what improvements they'd like to see. The goal is to create a downtown corridor that's more welcoming to pedestrians while supporting local businesses, daily activities, and community gatherings.
Below the surface, the project will tackle critical infrastructure needs. Outdated stormwater systems will be replaced with modern equipment designed to reduce flooding risks and help the area better withstand climate change impacts.
The reconstruction builds on recent streetscape improvements in the area. Last year, the City finished upgrading the western portion of Charlotte Street from Park Street to Aylmer Street North. Earlier planning work in 2018 produced design concepts for the eastern section running from Aylmer Street North to Water Street. This current initiative will unite those separate visions into a comprehensive plan for the entire stretch.
Field investigations are already happening as part of the planning process and will continue through 2026. Residents may notice survey markings on the ground, utility locate flags, work crews, equipment, and occasional minor disruptions. These activities help engineers understand both surface and subsurface conditions before finalizing design plans.
The City is using existing conceptual streetscape designs as a starting point for the next planning phase. Community feedback collected through the survey will directly inform the detailed design work ahead.
Those interested in participating can find the survey on the City's Charlotte Street Reconstruction project page.
