Our region experienced a turbulent Saturday as severe weather systems moved through southwestern Ontario, spawning two confirmed tornadoes that touched down in Lindsay and Woodstock.
The Northern Tornadoes Project, which investigates reported tornado activity across the province, verified late Saturday that both twisters had made landfall. The organization has preliminarily assigned each tornado an EF0 rating — the lowest classification on the enhanced Fujita scale, which measures tornado intensity based on wind speeds and resulting damage.
EF0 tornadoes typically produce wind speeds ranging from 65 to 85 kilometres per hour. Both Saturday's storms appear to have caused relatively limited destruction, with the damage assessment continuing in affected areas.
The Woodstock tornado arrived as Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the region, alerting residents to expect damaging winds, large hail, and locally intense rainfall alongside the twister threat.
According to a Facebook post from the Northern Tornadoes Project about the Woodstock storm, the organization does not plan to dispatch a survey team given the minor nature of the damage reported so far.
Similarly, the group indicated it would not immediately send investigators to Lindsay, though some evidence of minor damage has surfaced. The project will gather additional information before making a final determination about whether an on-site assessment is warranted.
In Woodstock, cleanup operations continued into Sunday following the storm's passage. The City of Woodstock reported that crews were assessing and clearing tree damage affecting sidewalks, boulevards, and park areas throughout the community.
The storm also damaged a cricket field fence, forcing officials to close the facility on Sunday while repairs are arranged.
While tornado activity in Ontario is not uncommon during summer months, confirmed touchdowns serve as important reminders for residents to stay weather-aware and heed Environment Canada warnings when severe conditions threaten our communities.
