Our community's public transit system became the scene of a disturbing incident Thursday afternoon when a masked teenager allegedly assaulted and threatened another passenger while carrying concealed weapons on a City of Peterborough transit bus.
Peterborough Police responded to the area of Parkhill Road and Armour Road following reports of a passenger with a knife. According to authorities, the bus driver had already stopped the vehicle when officers arrived, and the suspect had exited the bus and was walking along Armour Road after dropping something in the grass.
When police located and arrested the suspect, a search revealed alarming findings: the 14-year-old was carrying both a sword and bear mace. The investigation revealed that the suspect, who had been wearing a face mask during the incident, had allegedly punched and verbally threatened another teenaged passenger while on the bus.
The incident raises serious questions about safety on our public transit system and the accessibility of dangerous weapons to minors. The presence of both a sword and bear mace suggests a level of premeditation that is particularly concerning for a suspect of such young age.
The 14-year-old Peterborough male now faces five charges:
• Assault
• Uttering Threats – Cause death or Bodily Harm
• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Carrying concealed weapon
• Disguise with Intent
Despite the serious nature of the charges, the accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Sunday, July 13, 2026.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges facing public transit systems and the importance of vigilance among drivers and passengers alike. The quick action by the bus driver in stopping the vehicle and the suspect's exit likely prevented the situation from escalating further.
For transit riders in our community, this event underscores the need to remain aware of one's surroundings and to report suspicious behavior immediately to drivers or authorities. The safety of all passengers depends on our collective commitment to looking out for one another on public transportation.
