As students prepare to head back to school, the City of Peterborough is calling on community members to help keep our children safe during their daily commutes.
The City is actively recruiting part-time school crossing guards to fill positions at crossing locations throughout Peterborough. These vital community safety roles help ensure students can navigate busy streets safely as they travel to and from school each day.
Currently, our city's crossing guard program employs more than 50 guards who staff 48 crossing locations serving 23 schools across Peterborough. These City employees hold authority under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act to direct children across streets at designated school crossings.
The positions offer flexible part-time hours built around school schedules. Morning shifts typically start between 7:40am and 8:50am, while afternoon assignments generally run between 2:20pm and 4:05pm. Specific shift times vary depending on the location and the school's arrival and dismissal schedule.
The City conducts crossing guard recruitment drives once or twice annually, keeping applications on file for one year. Officials are looking for individuals who demonstrate a genuine commitment to child safety and possess qualities like trustworthiness, dependability, and flexibility to work various shifts.
