Our community is rallying around those affected by a serious collision that occurred north of Ennismore on Friday afternoon, leaving one person critically injured and requiring airlift to a trauma hospital.
At 4 p.m. on Friday, June 26, Peterborough County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and emergency services responded to a report of a serious collision on Tara Road at Viner Line in Selwyn Township. When first responders arrived on scene, they found a pickup truck on the shoulder with significant front-end damage and an SUV on its side in the ditch.
According to witnesses who spoke with police, the northbound SUV made a turn in front of the southbound pickup truck, resulting in the violent collision. The impact was severe enough to flip the SUV and send it into the roadside ditch.
Both the driver and passenger of the SUV were initially transported to Peterborough Regional Health Centre. One of those individuals was later airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma hospital for specialized care, indicating the severity of their injuries. The occupants of the pickup truck were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The collision forced the closure of Tara Road between Edenderry Ln. and Ennis Rd. for several hours while police documented the scene and conducted their investigation. The extended closure impacted local traffic as investigators worked to piece together the circumstances of the crash.
Police are continuing to investigate the collision and are asking for the public's help. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam or video footage and has not yet spoken to police is asked to call the Peterborough County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance on our rural roads, particularly when making turns across oncoming traffic. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this serious collision as they recover from their injuries.
