Paddles up for a purpose as Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival gears up for milestone year

Paddles will hit the water once again next month as one of Peterborough’s most recognizable fundraisers approaches a major milestone.

Registration is already underway for the 25th annual Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival, set for June 13 at Del Crary Park on Little Lake, with a fundraising goal of $325,018 in support of cancer care at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

That number isn’t random. Organizers increased last year’s goal by 25 per cent to mark the anniversary, while also building meaning into every digit. The “2” and “5” reflect that two in five Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The “18” highlights that one in eight women will face breast cancer, and the “.01” acknowledges the small percentage of men who will also develop the disease.

Festival chair Michelle Thornton says the event continues to make a major impact locally, with nearly $4.9 million raised since it’s inception.
