If you've spotted a white kayak cutting through the waters of Owen Sound's bay in recent weeks, you've likely witnessed Lesley Wilson preparing for an extraordinary journey that begins Monday, June 16.
Wilson, a retired Owen Sound resident, is set to paddle between 400 and 600 kilometers from our community all the way to Peterborough, raising funds and awareness for Autism Ontario. The ambitious route will take her across the waters of Georgian Bay to Port Severn, then through the locks of the Trent-Severn Waterway before reaching her final destination.
For Wilson, this challenging expedition is deeply personal. She has two grandchildren who have autism, and they're the driving force behind her commitment to this cause.
"Absolutely wonderful people. They are the main reason why I'm doing it," Wilson explained. She's also paddling for a neighbor she works with who is autistic, adding, "Also for him and generally for the caregivers."
While Wilson paddled frequently in her 20s and 30s, she recently returned to the sport and has been pushing her limits on the open water. Her recent training sessions have prepared her well for what lies ahead.
"I've been challenging myself over the years to kayak on the big waters. I love it," she said. This year has been particularly successful: "I've been able to head up against some strong winds and some big waves and it's been great."
All funds raised through Wilson's journey will benefit Autism Ontario's Central-East region, which serves Grey Bruce. The organization provides crucial support and resources to families and individuals affected by autism throughout our area.
Wilson is inviting our community to be part of her adventure in multiple ways. If you're along her route and spot her paddling, she encourages you to join her on the water.
"Join me on my paddle. If you're in the area and you see me kayaking, get your boat out, get your kayak out, whatever you want to do. Come out and say hello to me, support me along the way, have a little conversation, make sure that I'm doing okay and whatnot. I think that would be fantastic to meet all these people along the way," Wilson said.
Those wishing to support Wilson's cause financially can find her donation page on Facebook at Lesley C Wilson. "I have a QR code on there. It will take you right to my Autism Ontario donation page," she noted.
As Wilson prepares to push off from Owen Sound on Monday, she carries with her not just the strength she's built through weeks of training, but the love for her grandchildren and the hope of making a difference for families throughout Grey Bruce navigating life with autism.
