Our province's highways are about to get a little faster. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced Wednesday that speed limits will increase from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on additional sections of highways across Ontario, with the changes taking effect this Friday, June 26, 2026.
The expansion represents a significant milestone for provincial transportation policy. Once implemented, nearly 90 percent of Ontario's highway network will operate at the 110 km/h speed limit, according to Sarkaria.
The rollout will begin with sections of Highways 416 and 401 in eastern Ontario on Friday. Following that initial phase, increased speed limits will come to the Queen Elizabeth Way and Highways 400, 401, 402, 403, 416 and 417.
This latest expansion builds on changes the province approved in 2022, when speed limits were raised to 110 km/h on 16 sections of highways. That earlier initiative marked the beginning of a broader effort to modernize speed limits on Ontario's major transportation corridors.
For drivers who regularly commute on these routes, the change could mean slightly shorter travel times on longer trips. The higher speed limit aligns Ontario more closely with highway speeds in other provinces and reflects modern vehicle safety standards and highway design improvements.
As always, drivers should remember that posted speed limits represent maximum speeds under ideal conditions. Weather, traffic, and road conditions may require slower speeds for safe travel.
