A weekend outing on Stewart Lake turned tragic when a canoe capsized, claiming the life of a 31-year-old Mississauga resident.
The Bracebridge detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police received an emergency call Saturday evening around 8 p.m. reporting that a canoe had overturned in Georgian Bay Township waters. Two people had been paddling when their vessel flipped roughly 40 feet from the shoreline.
A boater traveling through the area managed to pull one of the canoeists from the water to safety. The second person, however, went beneath the surface and never came back up.
Search teams recovered the victim's body on Sunday. Authorities have confirmed the deceased is a 31-year-old from Mississauga.
The investigation remains active, with both the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service now participating in the inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
In response to the incident, OPP officials are urging everyone who ventures onto the water to prioritize safety measures. They emphasize the importance of wearing life jackets or flotation devices that fit correctly, reviewing weather forecasts before departure, and keeping all necessary safety gear within easy reach while on the water.
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that even calm-looking lakes can present serious dangers, and that being close to shore offers no guarantee of safety when conditions change suddenly.
