The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers showed flashes of championship-caliber play Thursday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, but a devastating mistake in the final minute cost them dearly in a 13-12 loss to the Oakville Rock.
With just 32 seconds remaining on the clock, a miscalculated pass gave Oakville defender Jake Darlison a breakaway opportunity. He capitalized, scoring the game-winner and silencing the home crowd on July 16.
Captain Robert Hope acknowledged his team's potential while pointing to critical errors that proved costly. "We made too many mistakes at inopportune times [and they capitalized on them]," Hope told PTBO Today. "We were a little sloppy early; defensively, just throwing balls away, giving up too many opportunities, not shots that Hutchy wanted to see. Offensively, I thought we scored enough, we just have to be better on transition and defence coming back through that way."
The contest featured dramatic momentum swings that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The teams traded goals throughout the opening half, knotting the score six times before Oakville exploded for five consecutive goals to build a 10-6 advantage in the second period.
Our Lakers refused to fold, however, responding with their own six-goal surge spanning the end of the second period and the start of the third. That run gave Peterborough a 12-10 lead and appeared to put them in control.
But Oakville clawed back with two goals in just 44 seconds to tie the game, setting the stage for Darlison's heartbreaker. Brad McCulley had one last chance with five seconds remaining, but former Laker Landon Kells made the save to preserve the victory for the visitors.
Kells entered the game in relief of Evan Constantopolous and didn't allow a single goal after taking over in net. Drew Hutchison started for the Lakers and surrendered 10 goals before Nick Rose replaced him, holding Oakville scoreless for more than 20 minutes.
The loss has significant playoff implications. With four games remaining in the Major Series Lacrosse regular season, the Lakers are tied for fourth place with Brooklin, though Peterborough holds the tiebreaker and has a game in hand. They trail third-place Cobourg by four points and sit six points behind Oakville.
Hope emphasized the urgency of the situation. "When you start playing (at the beginning of the year) you start thinking about playoffs. That's your first checkmark is to get into playoffs and finish as high as you can," Hope told PTBO Today. "Then you know your matchup, get out of the first round, second round and get to the Mann Cup. That's your ultimate goal. We have to have a killer mentality here for the next four. I thought we've gotten better each one but we still are committing the same mistakes."
Head coach Mike Hasen stressed the importance of treating every remaining contest as a must-win. "We just have to make sure we win the next game and it's an important one because it does have playoff implications," Hasen said. "Every game is a playoff game here for us moving forward but it's a focus on Cobourg and making sure we're at our best for that one."
That crucial matchup arrives next Thursday, July 23, when the Cobourg Kodiaks visit the PMC. The season series between the teams is tied 1-1, making this game critical for potential playoff positioning and tiebreaker scenarios.
The game will also feature the long-awaited Retro Night honoring the 1986 Jr. A Peterborough Maulers. Fans can expect throwback jerseys, a soundtrack of 80s and 90s hits, and the return of Toonie Dogs as the Lakers look to bounce back and keep their playoff hopes alive.
