Our community's firefighters faced a familiar challenge early Tuesday morning when flames erupted once again at the former Nicholson file factory on Cavan Street — the second major fire at the historic site in less than two years.
Port Hope Fire Chief Jason Williams reported that crews responded to the vacant warehouse property around 4:55 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, after receiving reports of a fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a developing blaze inside the building and immediately shifted to defensive operations, attacking the flames from outside the structure.
The fire response required closing Cavan Street, located just north of our downtown core, as crews worked to contain the blaze. The Cobourg Fire Department provided mutual aid, bringing heavy equipment to help extinguish hot spots throughout the property.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in Tuesday's incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as authorities work to determine what sparked the blaze in the empty building.
This marks a troubling pattern for the historic property. In July 2024, a large fire caused significant damage to the south side of the building, raising concerns about the safety and security of the long-vacant structure.
The large brick building has stood on the property since the late 19th century and has been vacant since the mid-1990s. Despite its abandoned state, the property represents an important piece of our community's industrial heritage. The current owners have been working on plans to transform a section of the building into upscale condominiums, though the repeated fires may complicate those redevelopment efforts.
As our fire department continues its investigation into Tuesday's blaze, questions remain about the future of this historic landmark and what measures might be needed to prevent further incidents at the site.
