Our community prepares to honor one of its own today as the body of Const. Tarun Bali returns to Thornhill ahead of his funeral. The 29-year-old Ontario Provincial Police officer was tragically killed in the line of duty this week, and his homecoming marks a somber moment for all who knew him and for the broader law enforcement family.
Const. Bali was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in the northern town of Hearst, approximately 520 kilometres east of Thunder Bay. The incident occurred as fellow officers were searching for a man who had escaped from a hospital. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy underscore the dangers our police officers face every day while protecting communities across Ontario.
This afternoon, a procession will depart from the Forensic Sciences and Coroner's Complex in North York, traveling west along Highway 401 to a funeral home in Thornhill. The Ontario Provincial Police has invited community members who wish to show their support to gather on one of the highway's overpasses to pay their respects as the procession passes. For those unable to attend in person, an online book of condolence has been made available.
Const. Bali had served with the OPP for two and a half years and was assigned to the Dufferin detachment in central Ontario. At the time of his death, he was on deployment with the James Bay detachment, demonstrating the commitment and flexibility required of officers who serve communities across our vast province.
The loss of such a young officer, dedicated to protecting others, resonates deeply within our community. As Thornhill prepares to receive Const. Bali, we are reminded of the sacrifice made by those who wear the uniform and the families who support them.
Funeral arrangements are still being finalized, and details will be announced in the coming days. An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with Const. Bali's death.
As our community comes together to mourn this loss, we extend our deepest condolences to Const. Bali's family, friends, and colleagues. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
