Our community will see a mix of closures and modified hours this Wednesday, July 1st, as Peterborough marks Canada Day with adjusted city services and facility operations.
Residents planning errands or outings should note that several key facilities will be closed for the holiday. Peterborough City Hall, the Peterborough Public Library, and the social services office on Charlotte Street will all be shuttered on Canada Day. The city-county landfill and the Household Hazardous Waste Depot will also be closed, so hold off on any disposal runs until later in the week.
Families with children in city-operated child care centres should make alternative arrangements, as all these facilities will be closed for the holiday.
Transit Running on Holiday Schedule
Peterborough Transit will operate on a Sunday/holiday service schedule on Canada Day, with temporary detours on some routes to accommodate the Canada Day Parade. Regular service resumes Thursday, July 2nd. Riders can find detailed schedules at www.peterborough.ca/transit.
What's Open for Canada Day
Several attractions will welcome visitors during the holiday. The Art Gallery of Peterborough opens its doors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the Peterborough Museum and Archives will be open from noon to 5 p.m.
Families looking to enjoy the outdoors can visit the Riverview Park and Zoo, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. For those wanting to stay active indoors, the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre will operate from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Beach and Water Safety
Swimmers heading to Beavermead beach will find lifeguards on duty from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Canada Day. However, there is no lifeguard supervision at Rogers Cove, so swimmers there should exercise extra caution.
Splash pads throughout city parks will be operational from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and city wading pools will have lifeguard supervision from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
All services and facilities return to their regular schedules on Thursday, July 2nd, giving residents a full day to celebrate Canada's national holiday before returning to normal operations.
